Warning, some spoilers...but nothing that ruins the movie.
Before Watching
After seeing Godzilla King of the Monsters I couldn't wait for this! I still hadn't seen Kong Skull Island and (thanks to Steve) I got to see it hours before going to the theater for this. There was some spoilers I knew about beforehand, but I kinda already expected Mecha-Godzilla to be in it since the modern take on these movies is to throw in too much of a derp derp human element. Part of the reason I enjoyed King of the Monsters so much is 'cos humans were less relevant with all the monster fights. Less humans, more monsters...but I knew with Kong carrying a weapon, having human handlers and Mecha-Godzilla being added that this was gonna be a step back from what I wanted. Still wanted to see it, though...especially after seeing what they did with Godzilla & Kong in their previous movies leading up to this.
While Watching
Tencent involved in this (like also with the Monster Hunter movie), too...and wouldn't ya know...the ccp Tencent uses this movie to destroy Hong Kong, hrmmm. They did...wrecked Hong Kong hardcore, but the battle was fun to watch...especially Kong being a giant gorilla swinging around buildings like that. I forgot that the girl from Stranger Things was in this and I'm kinda tired of how they try to make her so "cool"...whatever...much cooler was the Kong/Skull Island native girl communicating through sign language...I like that. Hollow Earth and other conspiracy stuff...oh boy, but when they get there the special effects were so cool...I shoulda did IMAX 3D on that. Just them traversing it and the creatures in that environment were cool lookin'. There was some cool scenes in this that I knew were driving some points they were trying to make without being too annoying. Mecha-Godzilla story and design were...a lil' off...I did like how it looked skeletal, but it's upper-body also looked goofy and it was too over-powered...interesting how it got a mind of it's own separate from it's creators'. It was clear (and rightfully so) that Godzilla is stronger/better than Kong in the battle and how they wanted to protect/help him. They villainized Godzilla a bit while focusing on making Kong more the hero, but by the end it balanced out. The pivotal scene in the fight between them when Godzilla no longer saw Kong as a threat was emotionally powerful considering they were monsters. I loved the ro-sham-bo between the 3 titans and how they played that out (don't wanna spoil too much but: Mecha>Godzilla>Kong>Mecha) . I saw the ending "winner" coming and really it was the best way to end it. The overall point was that these monsters were necessary to keep themselves and us in the world in balance...that was always the original Japanese intent to monster movies. They're monsters, they're "bad guys" but they're also kinda good guys and on our side in a way.
After Watching
I gotta see the original goofy Godzilla vs. Kong again...hell, I need to see all the old monster movies again. I felt satisfied with this movie 'cos there were ways they coulda messed it up, but they didn't...and I'm glad.
Here's my last spoiler:
