Super Power Supplies Catalog Fall/Winter 93

This starts the history of the Nintendo Power Super Power Supplies Catalog for Super Power Club members.  These were separate catalogs periodically shipped with subscriber magazines and/or shipped individually.  They offered Nintendo & Nintendo Power Magazine related items for purchase.  Ordering had simplified pricing and bonuses were offered like Super Power Stamps which when mailed with your order gave you $1 off per stamp.

In this checklist (Blogger text and YouTube vids) the catalogs will be listed with approximate Volume #'s since subscribers sometimes got some of them different months depending on how they were shipped to them.

Illusion of Gaia Cut-Out Folding Display (With Coupon)*
Illusion of Gaia Explorer Handbook**

*This Cut-Out was either for the store POS countertop display, the newsstand edition of this volume or a bonus given to west coast subscribers?  I had seen this on an old Nintendo Power checklist online and then found it later on eBay from a west coast seller.  It is speculated that NOA (Nintendo of America) may have sent this bonus to west coast subscribers as they might've thought games like these (JRPG's) would've done better with west coast demographics.  I, being in the midwest, did not get this bonus with the coupon, but just regular Super Power Club Certificate version of the coupon in my volume.

**This Handbook did not directly go to subscribers, but was rather packed-in with the game itself.  Carrying the Nintendo Power name this thicker Handbook replaced the usual instruction manual that came with a game and may have been a way to cross-promote the magazine to those who bought the game.  Nintendo Power being a marketing arm of NOA often did this to help promote "Japanesy" games they translated and published in the west.

Dear Nintendo Power Subscriber letter*
2008 Virtual Console Calendar**

*This is a letter from Nintendo Power Editor-In-Chief: Chris Slate.  This is to inform readers that Nintendo was no longer going to publish the magazine and that Future Publishing was taking over.  This letter had an ad for the ESRB on the back.  Personal note: Future Publishing wasn't a good turn for the magazine: way more ads, many un-needed extra issues deluding the NP brand and to cash-in on the Wii & DS era, confusingly changing the difference between newsstand & subscriber volumes and in the end, running the magazine into the ground.

(Naruto Path of the Ninja 2)

*This begins a subscriber & collector's nightmare: Future Publishing decided to start making Subscriber & Newsstand Editions of the magazine going forward.  The Subscriber Edition would have a white binding denoting it was the "Subscriber Edition" and would have a clean cover (no text, full artwork) with an organized contents, volume #, month & year box in the lower left corner while the Newsstand Edition would continue the black binding with content text/ads all over the cover.  What makes this worse is sometimes the cover art was way different and it seemed Newsstand Edition's would have more extras while loyal Subscriber Edition's would not!

**it's made to look like a Nintendo Power mini-mag, but it's a 1 page folded advertisement

"EXCLUSIVE! game crazy PLAYER'S GUIDE BONUS POSTER INSIDE" cover which comes with a perforated centerfold for PokéMon XD: Gale Of Darkness Shadow Lugia (blank back) in the back of the guide

collector's notes:
Guides from this era have had retailer markings on the cover suggesting they were exclusive to that retailor and/or came with that retailors' bonus.  Some guides even came free with the purchase of pertaining hardware/software of said game from certain retailers.  To make it crazier, sometimes these bonuses were not only retailer specific, but also Canadian exclusive too!  I personally don't know if I count these as variant covers 'cos some of this could've happened at the retailor level (with stickers) later on to try to clear extra stock of these guides.

I will list offers I know of here:
-KMART-
free guide offer as noted on the covers of the Kmart version of these games: Super Mario Sunshine, Wario World, The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime and Animal Crossing

PLAYING WITH SUPER POWER SUPER NES CLASSICS

*came with stickers in the back of the guide

**pseudo-branded as Nintendo/Nintendo Power published, but they were brought out by Prima and were produced to launch with the NES Classic and SNES Classic mini consoles...as such, they featured only the games on those Classic mini consoles

Later Added these to this checklist since they're directly or indirectly related to Nintendo Power.  These have also been called the NES/SNES "Black Books" or "Bibles" and released soon after the NES & SNES consoles launched.  The NES guide was made around the time between the Nintendo FUN CLUB Newsletter and the actual Nintendo Power Magazine while the SNES guide came later with "Produced By: NINTENDO POWER" printed on the back.

***staple binding to make it easier to get the posters out and cover has a gold foil background
****cover has a silver foil "NINTENDO POWER COLLECTOR'S SPECIAL" seal

collector's notes:
I have listed these specials by the names on their bindings (and the wording above each barcode in parentheses) to avoid a lot of the redundant ALL CAPS:
"NINTENDO POWER PRESENTS"
"ULTIMATE GUIDE"
"OFFICIAL GUIDE"
"SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S ISSUE"
plastered all over the covers of these supplemental specials.  Future Publishing ran this kind of thing WAY into the ground and these specials would come out randomly with no listing on their website or in the main magazine making it difficult to track them all down.  They would sometimes advertise these in the main magazine but again, not very organized and they'd even advertise some that never came out since the magazine died off before they released them.  None of these were given to subscribers and were only available at the newsstand!

NINTENDO POWER Checklist Other Items

NINTENDO POWER Checklist Binder Items

Below are resources I've linked to with more information about these items...

Nintendo/NINTENDO POWER Promo VHS
I may compile a YouTube playlist with all the VHS that I have in the video above but some of them aren't on YouTube yet.  In the mean time you can come by my store (GAMESWAP) and get my Nintendo Archive Drive which includes all of these plus hours more Nintendo entertainment goodies.

NINTENDO POWER SUPER POWER CLUB Challenge Trading Cards
Someday I will go through all my cards to try to complete a book of them, but beyond that and the video of my Collector's Edition cards above, here are links to other checklists for the cards:

NINTENDO POWER SUPER POWER CLUB Caps (Pogs)
I showed off my pogs in the video above, but here's a link for those looking for a complete checklist for the pogs:

These are items I could never get in the past or had, but lost later.  I was calling this the "HOLY GRAIL" section, but I already have many things I'd already consider NP HOLY GRAILS so I changed this to my "WISH LIST" of things I still want.  If I ever obtain any of these I'll make future videos to reflect that.  While I consider my NINTENDO POWER collection 99% complete, if I had these items, I'd consider it 100% complete!

Nintendo FUN CLUB Newsletter 1 - 7
I have #4, #5 & #6, but maybe someday I can get the others.

NINTENDO POWER Welcome Package

This...would really require a time machine...I could spend a lot of money to obtain this full packet but it wouldn't have my name on it 'cos I wasn't a subscriber to the Nintendo FUN CLUB Newsletter or an early subscriber to NINTENDO POWER Magazine.

Nintendo Power Team Power Tips! Poster
Since I wasn't an early subscriber I missed this offer where you'd get this (now super rare) poster.  I've not seen a serious open eBay listing for this poster in years.  It's not considered a part of the main checklist 'cos it was not a pack-in to the magazine itself...but I still want it.  Also with this sign-up offer started the NP pins...

NINTENDO POWER TEAM POWER Pins
I can obtain these on eBay, but haven't yet.  To my knowledge & research the pins are like this:
1 year subscriber, 1 wing bronze/yellow pin
2 year subscriber, 2 wing silver/black pin
3 year subscriber, 3 wing gold/red pin
5 year/50 volume member pin
The last pin I believe they gave to those who got the Volume 1 - 50 backorder offer in Volume 50 of the magazine.  There were also pins of Nester, I believe...but some of thee are fan-made replica's.

NINTENDO POWER SUPER POWER CLUB
POWER CHALLENGE TRADING CARD Book
As mentioned in a video above I have the mini-binder book of the NP pogs so I'd like this to match it for the NP trading cards.

NINTENDO POWER SUPER POWER CLUB
Super Metroid Posters
Beyond being a a Nintendo nut & NINTENDO POWER collector, my favorite game series is Metroid.  I was gonna order one of these posters from the NP SPSC but I couldn't decide which?  By the time I decided (and could afford it) these items were never offered in the catalog again.  = [  Now I want them both to go with my Metroid shrine.

NINTENDO POWER SUPER POWER CLUB
EarthBound Pogs
I had these....I know I did since I was trying to get everything EarthBound back then (and I have most every other NP pog set)...but they went missing and to my knowledge these are like the most expensive pogs in the world!

NINTENDO POWER SUPER POWER CLUB
Killer Instinct Leather Jacket
I'll never get this, but it's fun to dream...these were the same jackets worn by the KI dancers at e3 1995 when they unveiled the SNES version of the game...

PokéMon Trading Card Game Player's Guide
Black Star Holographic Promo Venusaur PokéMon Trading Card
I know I had this too!!!  The front cover of the guide says it's in there, I wouldn't have bought it without it!  I believe someone took it out of my guide and I didn't find out 'til later...oh well, $300 later I may get it back?

Just like in Captain N The Game Master, this Nintendo gamer has a dog that joins him in his adventures into games.  The early Nintendo Power magazine order cards would have dogs in them, too.

Notice the neon colors to the logo which they used in early magazine order cards, too...yellow & red were the standard colors for the logo.

Look at this "counselor's" silver Nintendo Power jacket...maybe I should add this jacket to my wish list?

They gave a FREE Dragon Warrior Game (Pak...ha ha...$40 value) with a subscription...damn!  I go into details about that in my 1988-1989 checklist video.  And yes...that is Casper Van Dean!

Now the commercials have a Nintendo Power theme song!  This was around the time the magazine went from bi-monthly to 12 a year...the ad says 6 volumes plus 6 strategy guides which is wrong...they only did 4 of those strategy guides (#13, #15, #17 & #19) and then went to a monthly publication after.

They went all out in this commercial:
-emergency program interruption (many commercials did this in the '80's & '90's: Michael Jackson, Max Headroom, Captain Power And The Soldiers Of The Future, etc.)
-headset wearing game counselor kid (this time with a "POWER TEAM" t-shirt)
-a dog (who knocks down the walls)
-hot neon colors
-a $60 value
The Players Guides sold it for my mom, only $15 plus 4 free guide and this is the commercial that finally got her to get me a subscription when I was 13...my first Volume was #27!
